Šibenik in winter

Winter turns Šibenik back into a town of locals. Two of the hill fortresses are free, Krka costs a fraction of the summer price, and the stone lanes are yours.

Šibenik does not close for winter. The cathedral, the old town and the Fortress of Culture all stay open, and Krka National Park runs on winter hours at its lowest price of the year. What changes is the sea: St Nicholas Fortress and most boat trips wait for spring.

Below: what the weather is like, which fortresses are free, what is closed, how Krka works in winter and which tours to look at. For the full fortress picture, see our Šibenik fortresses guide.

The quick answer

From 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027, Barone and St John's fortresses are free and St Michael's stays at €11.50. St Nicholas Fortress is closed until its 2027 season. Krka costs €7 for adults and €4 for children, open 09:00-16:00, without the Skradin boat or Lozovac bus. Days are mild but wetter: the January mean is 6.8 °C. Town tours are the ones to check for winter dates.

Is Šibenik worth visiting in winter?

Yes, for the old town and the fortresses at a slower pace. You trade swimming and boat days for empty lanes and lower prices.

The Cathedral of St James stays at the centre of town life all year. It is usually open from morning to evening, and Mass times differ, so a quiet visit fits best outside services. Its 71 carved heads on the apses are easier to study without a summer crowd below them. The steep lanes and stairways of the old town are cooler to climb, too.

Expect a lived-in town rather than a resort. Some waterfront terraces and seasonal places shut, but cafés and konobas used by locals carry on. Šibenik is also an easy base for a cheap Krka day. For the bigger picture, read our guide on whether Šibenik is worth visiting.

What is the weather like in Šibenik in winter?

Mild and changeable. Daily means run from about 7 °C in January to 12 °C in November, with rain on 9 to 12 days a month.

Šibenik has a Mediterranean climate, and frost is rare, though the record lows show cold snaps do happen. November is the wettest month. February is the driest and brighter than December. Pack a waterproof layer and shoes with grip: polished limestone steps get slippery in the rain.

Which fortresses in Šibenik are free in winter?

Barone and St John's, from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027. St Michael's keeps its €11.50 adult price.

The Fortress of Culture runs all three hill fortresses on one schedule: 09:00 to 17:00 every day, last entry 30 minutes before closing. Barone has the augmented-reality tour of the 1647 defence against the Ottomans and a café with views over the town. St John's, its neighbour, was built by the townspeople in 58 days in 1646. St Michael's, right above the old town, has the cisterns and the widest views over the St Anthony Channel.

Free entry does not shorten the climb. The three fortresses tour does the uphill part by eco tuk-tuk, picks you up in town and brings a guide, for $72 with all three entries included.

Can you visit St Nicholas Fortress in winter?

No. The 2026 season ran from 5 May to 18 October, and the fortress reopens with its 2027 season, whose dates are not out yet.

St Nicholas guards the mouth of the St Anthony Channel on its own islet, and the only way in is the official boat from the Šibenik waterfront. The visit takes about two hours with the boat, an escort and a mobile guide. In 2026 adults paid €19.50 in May and October and €27.50 from June to September, and a Krka ticket earned 10% off.

If St Nicholas is high on your list, plan for a May to October visit next year. The fortress is one of the Venetian defence works on the UNESCO list since 2017, and it pairs well with a spring Krka day at the shoulder price.

Is Krka National Park open in winter?

Yes. Adults pay €7 and children €4, and Skradinski buk is open 09:00-16:00 in November, December, January and February.

The winter ticket is the bargain of the year, but the park runs differently. The Skradin boat and the Lozovac bus only operate from 1 April to 31 October. In winter you may drive down from Lozovac to Skradinski buk instead, a short ride from Šibenik. Manojlovac and Burnum close from November to March, and the Visovac boats wait for April.

Check the holiday dates: the park closes on 25 and 26 December, opens only until 12:00 on 24 and 31 December, and on 1 January only the Lozovac entrance opens. Prices for every season are in our Krka prices post.

Which Šibenik tours run in winter?

The town-based tours are the ones to check first: the fortress tuk-tuk, the retro car, and the evening and medieval walks. Boat trips depend on the sea and the season.

None of the listings publish a winter timetable, so check availability for your date on each one. The retro car panorama tour covers the viewpoints in 45 minutes from $17. The evening walking tour ($44, 1 hour 30 minutes) and the medieval night walk ($39, 1 hour) suit the early winter dusk, when the lanes are lit and quiet. The city tour with wine tasting adds Babić and Maraština at the Rak winery to the three fortresses.

The Kornati, island and sailing trips are built around warm water and long days. Look again in spring. Every tour here has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which takes the risk out of a winter booking. For all of them side by side, see our Šibenik tours comparison.
