The Cathedral of St James

The Cathedral of St James in Šibenik is built entirely of stone, from the footings to the vaults and the dome, with no mortar, no wooden beams and no roof tiles. It was built between 1431 and 1536, consecrated in 1555 and listed by UNESCO in 2000 as a bridge between Gothic and Renaissance.

Šibenik's cathedral looks modest from a distance: a pale stone church on a small square near the water. Up close it is one of the strangest buildings in Europe. The roof is stone, the dome is stone, and the slabs fit into each other like parts of a puzzle, so the outside of the church traces the shape of the inside.

This guide covers who built it, how the stone-only construction works, the frieze of heads around the apses, what to look for inside, how to visit, and the Game of Thrones connection.

The quick answer

The cathedral was begun in 1431, taken over by Juraj Dalmatinac in 1441 and finished by Nikola Firentinac, who built the vaults and the dome. It was completed in 1536 and consecrated in 1555. It is built only of stone slabs, with no binder and no timber. Around the apses runs a frieze of 71 portrait heads. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. It is an active church, usually open from morning to evening, with Mass times that differ through the week.

Why is Šibenik cathedral famous?

Because it is built entirely of stone, without binder, beams or tiles, and because it marks the shift from Gothic to Renaissance. UNESCO listed it in 2000.

UNESCO inscribed the cathedral under three criteria: as a unique building, as the product of exchanges between northern Italy, Dalmatia and Tuscany, and as a testimony to the transition from Gothic to Renaissance church architecture. The Šibenik Tourist Board goes further and calls it the place where the Renaissance first appeared in Croatia.

The stone gives the building its unity. The lower parts are Gothic, the upper parts Renaissance, and the same pale limestone runs through both, so you barely see the join. The interior feels like an upturned stone ship.

Who built the Cathedral of St James?

Three master builders in turn: Francesco di Giacomo, then Juraj Dalmatinac from 1441, then Nikola Firentinac, who completed the vaults and the dome.

Juraj Dalmatinac (Giorgio da Sebenico), born in Zadar around 1410, shaped most of what you see: the apses, the heads, the baptistery and the stone technique. He died on 10 October 1473. Nikola Firentinac (Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino) took over and finished the roof and dome in the new Renaissance style. A statue of Juraj by Ivan Meštrović stands in front of the cathedral.

How was the cathedral built only of stone?

The stone slabs were carved to interlock with tongue-and-groove joints, so the vaults, roof and dome hold together without mortar or timber.

The Šibenik Tourist Board describes it as the only cathedral in the world built entirely of stone without any binding material, beams or roof tiles. Juraj cut each slab to fit exactly against the next. Because the roof slabs are also the ceiling, the outline of the facade, the barrel roof and the dome matches the space inside.

The Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts calls the dome's slabs, fitted into grooves, an innovative technical solution for its time. The dome was damaged during the Homeland War in the 1990s and has since been restored; the Civitas Sacra centre nearby tells that story.

How many heads are on Šibenik cathedral?

71 carved human heads, plus 3 lion heads, run around the outside of the three apses and part of the north wall.

They are men, women and children, and they look like real people of Juraj's time: plain, worried, amused, bored. The Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts says Juraj carved about 40 of them himself and his workshop made the rest; in an 1840 renovation, 14 were replaced with weaker copies. The heads sit at eye level, which the tourist board reads as a statement: ordinary people, not saints looking down.

Walk round the outside of the apse on the street side, slowly. The best light is in the morning or late afternoon, when the sun rakes across the stone. At night, the lit frieze is one of the stops on the medieval night walk.

What should you look for at the cathedral?

Juraj Dalmatinac's baptistery below the south apse, the Lion portal on the north side, and the stone vault and dome from below.

  • The baptistery: a small, intimate room with a four-lobed plan below the southern apse. Three putti hold up the font, and the vault above, with God the Father in the centre, is made of nine stone pieces joined without mortar. Children are still baptised here. In Your Pocket calls it Juraj's greatest masterpiece.
  • The Lion portal: the north door, by Bonino of Milan. Lions carry the columns, Adam and Eve stand on top, and above them are Juraj's figures of St Peter and St James.
  • The dome and roof from inside: stand under the crossing and look up at the bare slabs.
  • Firentinac's statues: on the outside of the church, including St Michael.

Can you visit Šibenik cathedral, and when is it open?

Yes. It is an active church, usually open from morning to evening, with Mass times that differ through the week. Dress modestly and keep quiet during services.

The cathedral stands on Trg Republike Hrvatske 1, a few minutes' walk from the waterfront and about 10 minutes from the bus station. The tourist board asks visitors to dress appropriately, since services and weddings are held regularly. Early morning and the hour before closing are the quietest times, and the square is at its best at dusk.

A guided walk adds the stories you cannot read off the stones. The evening walking tour covers the cathedral square and the old town in 1 hour 30 minutes, and the three-fortress tour ends with a stop at the cathedral.

Was Game of Thrones filmed at Šibenik cathedral?

Yes. The cathedral and the square in front of it stood in for Braavos in season 5, filmed in September 2014.

The Šibenik Tourist Board lists the cathedral square among its Game of Thrones locations, and the old-town skyline appears when Arya arrives in Braavos. The square looks much as it did on screen: the cathedral on one side, the Renaissance town loggia opposite.

The Game of Thrones tour combines a retro-car ride with an old-town walk and the filming spots, with a licensed guide. A guest says the guide Ivan was an extra in season 5. "If you're going on a guided city tour and have seen Game of Thrones, then you have to choose this one" (Siv, Jul 2026).

What else is there to see around the cathedral?

The Civitas Sacra interpretation centre, the town loggia, the cistern of the four wells and the medieval garden of St Lawrence are all a few minutes away.

The Civitas Sacra centre, opened in 2019 in the restored Galbiani Palace, a 3-minute walk from the cathedral, uses multimedia to tell the building's story, including the damage to the dome in the Homeland War, and shows pieces from the diocesan treasury. A short walk uphill, the monastery of St Lawrence has a small medieval garden, and the cistern of the four wells sits just off the main street.

The medieval night walk strings these together after dark from the cathedral's main entrance: the square, the cistern, the oldest street, St Lawrence, the column of shame and the first public lamp from 1895. "Highly recommend to do early in your trip so you can get a good overview" (Christa, Jun 2025).
