Booking choice: The three fortresses tour, from $72 per person. Check dates Tour details
Šibenik was built to be defended. The town walls grew from St Michael's on the rock above the old town; Barone and St John's went up in a hurry in 1646, just before an Ottoman attack; and St Nicholas was built in the 1540s on an islet at the entrance to the St Anthony Channel, the only way in from the sea.
This guide covers how to visit each one, what you see, what the tickets cost in 2026, what changes in winter and how to see the hill fortresses without the climb.
The quick answer
St Michael's, Barone and St John's are run by Fortress of Culture Šibenik: open 09:00 to 17:00 daily, €11.50 for St Michael's, €11.50 for Barone and St John's together, or €15 for all three on a combined ticket valid for 7 days. From 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027, Barone and St John's are free. St Nicholas Fortress is visited only by the official boat tour from the Krka pier: €19.50 for adults in April, May and October, €27.50 from June to September, about 2 hours. Its 2026 season ended on 18 October.
What are the four fortresses of Šibenik?
St Michael's above the old town, Barone and St John's on the hills behind it, and St Nicholas at the mouth of the St Anthony Channel.
Three are run by Fortress of Culture Šibenik (Tvrđava kulture) and reached on foot or by road. St Nicholas belongs to a separate county body and is visited only from the water. It is part of the UNESCO site "Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries", inscribed in 2017.

How do you get to St Nicholas Fortress?
Only on the official boat tour, which leaves the Krka pier on the Šibenik waterfront, where Obala hrvatske mornarice meets Obala dr. Franje Tuđmana.
The fortress pier can be reached only by sea while restoration continues. Tickets are sold online on the official Kanal sv. Ante shop and at the info centre at Obala dr. Franje Tuđmana 4, across from the pier. Seats on the boat are limited, so buy ahead in July and August.
In 2026 the boats left at 10:00 and 12:30 from 5 May to 12 June, with a 15:00 departure added from 13 June and a 17:30 one from 11 July. August ran at 09:45, 12:30, 15:00 and 17:30; September at 09:45, 12:30 and 15:00; and 1 to 18 October at 09:45 and 12:30. Expect a similar pattern in 2027 once the dates are published.

How much is St Nicholas Fortress, and is it worth it?
Adults paid €19.50 in April, May and October 2026 and €27.50 from June to September. For about 2 hours with the boat, an escort and a mobile guide, yes.
The ticket covers the boat ride through the Kanal-Luka protected landscape, an escort on the boat and at the fortress, an audio-visual mobile guide (bring your own headphones) and visitor insurance. Children 6 to 18 paid €15.50 or €20.50, and under 6s go free. Seniors over 65 and students paid €17.50 or €25.00.
There are discounts too: 10% off with a Krka or Kornati National Park ticket or a Fortress of Culture ticket, and 20% with the Šibenik Card. The fortress was built in the 1540s to a design by Giangirolamo Sanmicheli and once carried 32 cannons. It opened to visitors in July 2019, after two years of reconstruction. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
See St Nicholas from the water any time of year: the Kornati speedboat day runs out through the channel right past it.
Check dates for the Kornati boat tourCan you visit St Nicholas Fortress in winter?
No. St Nicholas Fortress can only be visited on the official boat tour, which leaves the Krka pier on the Šibenik waterfront. The 2026 season ran from 5 May to 18 October, and the 2027 dates are not out yet.
The official season usually runs from May to October. The price list also has an April column, so keep an eye on the Kanal sv. Ante site in early spring for the 2027 timetable. Out of season you can still see the fortress from the water: the Kornati boat tour passes it on the way out, along with the military bunkers and the sea tunnel cut into the rock of the channel.
From the shore, the footpath along the channel to the Kanal sv. Ante visitor centre in Minerska bay has a lookout over the channel, the archipelago and the fortress.

What is there to see at St Michael's Fortress?
The oldest of the town's fortresses, with the best views over the old town, the channel and the Krka mouth, a 1,077-seat summer stage and cisterns below.
St Michael's was the first fortress built and the first restored in Šibenik. It sits on the rock directly above the old town, and the town walls grew from it. The 2014 renovation added the open-air stage, now the town's main concert venue from May to September. Underground cisterns are reached by lift, and the café bar opens from May to October, weather permitting. Fortress of Culture Šibenik puts a visit at about 45 minutes.
The address is Zagrađe 21. There are two entrances: the north one, from the fire station and Ana Rukavina Park, which the fortress recommends in July and August to avoid queues, and the south one from St Anne's cemetery. Visitors with limited mobility can use the access road from the fire station and ask staff for the lift to the stage level; the ramparts are not reachable that way.

Barone or St John's: what is the difference?
Barone has the augmented-reality tour and a café; St John's is the highest and largest of the three. One ticket covers both.
Barone was built in 1646 and named after the German baron Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, who oversaw its construction. Together with St John's it beat off the Ottoman attack of 1647. It stands about 90 m above sea level. The augmented-reality tour of the 1647 defence uses free AR devices and audio guides; allow about 40 minutes, or 1 hour 15 minutes with the AR tour. Most levels are reachable by a ramp on the east side. The address is Put Vuka Mandušića 28.
St John's was built by the townspeople in 58 days in 1646. Fortress of Culture calls it the largest of the three and the highest, with views over the city, the sea and the islands. Its renovation finished in 2022. At the top there is a summer bar and a souvenir shop in the old powder magazine, and below sits a WWII bunker. People with disabilities can reach the lower, northern part. The address is Put Tanaje 29.

Can you see Šibenik's fortresses without climbing?
Yes. The three-fortress tuk-tuk tour drives you to all three with entries included; the retro car tour stops at St John's; the wine tour adds a winery.
The hills are steep, and in July the climb to St John's is hard work. The Panoramic Tour with 3 Fortresses (US$72, 2 hours, up to 12) picks you up in town and covers Barone, St Michael's and St John's with every entry included. The city tour with wine tasting (US$100, 2 hours 30 minutes) runs the same fortresses with the same tuk-tuk operator and then pours Babić and Maraština at the Rak winery. One guest wrote that "this was a welcome break to climbing them all to the three fortresses" (Karen, Aug 2025).
For a quick look without going inside, the retro car panorama tour (US$17, 45 minutes) stops at St John's Fortress for photos. The tours compared guide sets them all side by side.
